01 / THE PROJECT

Project overview

WoodnZen offers a broad range of wooden products across kitchenware, servingware, home décor, and furniture.

The brand already had an existing WordPress website, but its design, content presentation, typography, imagery, and overall user experience no longer represented the quality or scale of the business.

Rather than simply making small visual changes, I recommended a more comprehensive redesign.

After reviewing the existing website and discussing the business requirements, we finalized a new design direction and rebuilt the website experience around clearer product discovery, stronger visual presentation, responsive layouts, and more flexible product functionality.

The website also needed to support WoodnZen’s mixed business model. Some products direct visitors to external marketplaces such as Amazon, while larger or bulk products require customers to submit enquiries directly instead of purchasing through a standard online checkout.

02 / THE BRIEF

Client requirements

The client needed to modernize an existing WordPress website while retaining the flexibility required for its growing product catalog.

The main requirements included:

  • Redesigning the outdated website interface
  • Improving the presentation of product categories and individual products
  • Updating typography, imagery, content, spacing, and visual styles
  • Creating a fully responsive experience across desktop, tablet, and mobile
  • Supporting external marketplace links for selected products
  • Creating enquiry functionality for wholesale and bulk products
  • Improving category and product navigation
  • Implementing content and SEO recommendations provided by the SEO team
  • Optimizing website images and overall performance
  • Making technical SEO improvements
  • Supporting custom functionality that could not be achieved through standard WordPress options

03 / THE APPROACH

My recommendations

After reviewing the original website, I recommended moving beyond individual design fixes and completing a broader UI and UX redesign.

The existing structure had useful content and products, but the presentation needed a more consistent visual system and a clearer journey for different types of customers.

I recommended restructuring the experience around the brand’s four major product areas: Kitchenware, Servingware, Home Décor, and Furniture while creating different conversion paths depending on how each product is sold.

Products available through external marketplaces could direct visitors to the appropriate purchasing platform, while wholesale and bulky products could use dedicated enquiry forms to generate direct business leads.

Once the overall direction was approved, the design was finalized and implemented in WordPress.

04 / THE EXECUTION

What I delivered

Complete Website Redesign

Redesigned the existing website with updated typography, imagery, content presentation, spacing, component styles, and responsive layouts.

The objective was to create a cleaner and more professional visual identity while making the large product catalog easier to explore.

WordPress & WooCommerce Development

Implemented the redesigned experience in WordPress and customized WooCommerce to work as more than a traditional online store.

WooCommerce was used to organize and manage the product catalog while custom functionality supported external purchasing and enquiry-based products.

Custom Product Experiences

Different products required different customer journeys.

For products available through external marketplaces, purchasing links were integrated into the product experience.

For bulk, wholesale, or products not directly available through those marketplaces, custom enquiry functionality was created so potential buyers could contact the business directly from the relevant product page.

This allowed the same website to support multiple product and sales scenarios without forcing every product through a traditional checkout process.

Custom Forms & Lead Generation

Designed and implemented custom forms for product and wholesale enquiries.

These forms were integrated into relevant areas of the website to make it easier for retailers, wholesalers, and bulk buyers to contact the company regarding specific products and requirements.

Lead-generation elements were also incorporated where required, including email capture and brochure-related interactions.

Custom PHP Development

A significant part of the project involved custom development beyond standard WordPress and WooCommerce functionality.

Custom PHP solutions were implemented for product-specific requirements, dynamic content, product enquiries, frontend behavior, and other functionality required by the client’s business model.

Product & Category Improvements

Improved the presentation and usability of major product categories, including:

Kitchenware · Servingware · Home Décor · Furniture

Product listing, filtering, sorting, specifications, category content, and individual product presentation were refined to make browsing a large catalog easier.

SEO Implementation

Worked alongside the client’s SEO team to implement technical and on-page requirements across the website.

This included:

  • Heading structure implementation
  • SEO content updates
  • Metadata-related improvements
  • Internal content structure
  • Image optimization
  • Sitemap improvements
  • Technical SEO fixes
  • Schema-related implementation
  • URL and taxonomy cleanup
  • Search-engine-friendly content presentation

SEO strategy and off-page activities remained coordinated with the client’s SEO team, while my role focused primarily on implementing the required on-page and technical changes within WordPress.

Image & Performance Optimization

Optimized website imagery for better loading performance while maintaining visual quality.

Additional performance improvements were made across the WordPress frontend to reduce unnecessary page weight and improve the overall browsing experience.

Responsive Development

Reviewed and optimized the redesigned interface across desktop, tablet, and mobile devices, including product grids, navigation, category pages, forms, content sections, and product detail layouts.

Key Challenges

One of the main challenges was that WoodnZen does not operate through a single conventional e-commerce flow.

Different products require different actions depending on availability, product size, market, and customer type.

Instead of forcing every visitor into the same checkout journey, the website was structured to support external marketplace purchases, direct product enquiries, wholesale enquiries, and catalog browsing within one consistent experience.

Another challenge was implementing the client’s growing list of custom requirements without making the WordPress backend difficult to maintain.

Custom PHP and dynamic WordPress functionality were therefore used selectively to provide flexibility while keeping content manageable for the website team.
